The Share of Businesses in Canada that Own IP by Industry

Only 21% of Canadian businesses own intellectual property, but ownership varies significantly by industry, with over half of firms in information and cultural industries holding IP compared to just 6% in construction and around 11% in transportation and logistics. These differences reflect how easily innovations can be protected across sectors, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding if Canada aims to increase overall IP ownership.
