Canada’s international trade numbers made headlines again this week when new data from Statistics Canada was released showing that our merchandise exports fell 3% in August while services exports declined 0.2%.

Even in this challenging environment, digitally delivered services including software, fintech, healthtech and graphic or architectual design, remains an important trade opportunity for Canada.

Canada’s trade in digitally delivered services skyrocketed between 2018 and 2021 but has since stalled. I dug into the numbers to discover why and found that the answer is not obvious. The evidence, contradictory.
